Shining a Light on Invisible Illnesses: Fibromyalgia me/cfs Gold Coast Support Group

On May 10 I had the honour of attending and supporting the Fibromyalgia and ME/CFS Awareness Day event held at the Labrador Community Centre.

As someone who cares deeply about community health and inclusion, I’m proud to share that I’ve recently joined the board of the Fibromyalgia ME/CFS Gold Coast Support Group Inc., a not-for-profit run by volunteers who are either living with or supporting someone with one of these invisible illnesses. The group has been running since 1998, and their work providing safe, welcoming support for locals navigating these illnesses is nothing short of inspiring.

About Fibromyalgia and ME/CFS

These two conditions affect thousands of Queenslanders – yet they remain widely misunderstood. Fibromyalgia and ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) can cause persistent pain, exhaustion, cognitive challenges and a range of overlapping symptoms. Many people living with these illnesses look perfectly healthy on the outside, but their daily experience is shaped by fatigue, brain fog, and the quiet courage it takes to simply get through the day.

That’s why 12 May is so important – it’s an international awareness day to highlight these conditions, but also to recognise the resilience of those living with them.

A Day of movement, meaning and community

The awareness event was a reflection of what this support group is all about – connection, laughter, understanding, and practical support.

One of the highlights for me was the NIA demonstration with Natalie. For those unfamiliar, NIA is a gentle, flowing form of movement that blends dance, martial arts and mindfulness. It was grounding, accessible and a perfect representation of how we can support wellbeing in ways that are inclusive and empowering.

We also had a creative session with Lisa from 7 Breaths, who helped attendees make meaningful mementos for Awareness Day. Lunch was shared, stories were exchanged, and we ended the day with speeches and a big slice of cake.

When people are given the space to be seen and supported, it changes everything.

To the incredible team at Fibromyalgia ME/CFS Gold Coast Support Group: thank you for welcoming me to the board, and thank you for the work you do all year round.
