Council candidacy
- 23 October 2023 – Announcement
- 14 November 2023 – Candidate: Residents upset about consultation after Councillor Ryan Bayldon-Lumsden suspended
“I’ve been attending meetings and talking to people in Arundel and Parkwood. The community feels unheard. Our residents must be active participants in shaping our communities. Tokenistic community consultation is not good enough, we deserve better.” - 20 December 2023 – Racist flyers sent to homes on Gold Coast
“Labrador is a multicultural community and we won’t be sharing the offensive material and giving it any more exposure. Since founding Labrador 4215 I have always been committed to promoting a safe and inclusive community for all residents.” - 11 January 2024 – Safety fears sparked after dog disappears and found dead near playground
“Council need to address such issues promptly to ensure the safety of our community, but it’s also crucial people are aware of local safety concerns,” she said. “Labrador 4215 has been instrumental in highlighting the issues most important to our community – you quickly see what issues are at the top of people’s minds and the common issues people feel the council need to be aware of. “It’s largely what motivated me to run for council in Division 7.” - 30 January 2024 – Candidates warn council that ratepayers fed up with ‘luxury spending’
“On my recent visit to the Division 7 office, I was surprised by the limited parking available — just two spots for staff and none for visitors.” Ratepayers are confronted with warning signs their vehicles could be towed away with many people using spots so they can walk to the nearby University Hospital and Griffith University. “With a huge space for the councillor’s face and name, the high visibility of the current office may be beneficial for re-election campaign, but is it the best use of the city’s budget,” Ms Schroeder said. “The previous office in the community centre was surely more affordable, and looking online, it’s easy to find spaces with ample parking and likely half the cost of rent.” - 31 January 2024 – Vandalised election signage
Gold Coast City Plan grassroots action
In 2021 I ran a strong grass-roots campaign to communicate the proposed Gold Coast City Plan amendments to affect Labrador, Biggera Waters and Southport West. This included providing online explainer content using my Labrador 4215 website, writing a letter to residents and coordinating letter box drops with volunteers, redesigning maps so that residents could understand the proposed changes, creating an e-petition to state government and media coverage:
- 13 August 2020 – Coast suburb in the dark about City Plan
Jenna Schroeder said she wanted to know the reason for “six months of silence since the second round of consultation” and why the plan was going back to councillors without any notice to the community of changes or results from the second round.”
- 7 April 2021 – Petition asks state government to investigate if council “thoroughly” engaged residents during proposed amendments to its City Plan
Labrador’s Jenna Schroeder has launched a petition asking for the state government to look into whether the Gold Coast City Council “correctly and thoroughly engaged residents in the proposed amendment” of the plan.
- 23 May 2021 – “Shut out” locals urged to sign petition for State probe of Gold Coast City Council’s City Plan community engagement process
Labrador’s Jenna Schroeder’s e-petition wants the state government to “investigate the appropriateness of the level of community engagement undertaken by the Gold Coast City Council before signing off on the City Plan amendments”.
- May 2021 – Channel 9 News Gold Coast coverage
Labrador 4215 group
- 21 November 2021 – Facebook community group ‘seeing laugh reacts on death’ as COVID misinformation spreads
(Jenna) said those managing such community groups had a responsibility to weed out false information. “It’s more those people who aren’t engaging, on the fence, who are reading a lot, who might just be making up their own minds quietly. It’s important to give them the best chance of reading correct information.”
Paws at the Park
Paws at the Park is the Gold Coast’s award-winning dog market event, and the largest of its type in Australia. I co-founded the event together with another small business owner, Lia Ferguson.
The event :
- Attracts thousands of attendees (and their pups!) to the Gold Coast
- Has raised over $75,000 for the Animal Welfare League QLD (AWLQ)
- Attracts major sponsors including the City of Gold Coast (via two city councillors), Pet Stock, EzyDog, RACQ and more
- Supports local business – we have hosted over 250 different dog-centric businesses since 2016
- Works with the City of Gold Coast to promote responsible pet ownership
Small business ownership
I am a three time small business owner, having owned Doggie Tea (a tea for dogs), Hugo’s Ice Creamery (an ice cream for… you guessed it, dogs) and Paws at the Park.
