From Dumplings to Dragon Dancing: The ANCWF’s Role in Our Community
Today, I had the privilege of attending a meeting with the Australian National Chinese Women’s Federation (ANCWF), and walked away with an appreciation for the incredible work they do on the Gold Coast and beyond. This group of dedicated women are making a real difference for Chinese women on the Gold Coast as well as the broader community as well.
Founded in 2019, the ANCWF is a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on empowering Chinese women, helping them integrate into Australian society, and tackling important issues like domestic violence, loneliness, and mental health. Beyond these advocacy efforts, they also celebrate and share Chinese culture through events and activities that invite everyone to connect and learn.
At their meeting, I learned about their plans for 2025 which is shaping up to be an amazing year!
Celebrating Culture and Community
The ANCWF has big plans for this Lunar New Year season – which will celebrate the Year of the Snake. They’ll kick things off by joining the City of Gold Coast’s Lunar New Year celebration on February 1, where they’ll provide entertainment and host a food marquee. Then, on February 15, they’ll hold their own Chinese Lunar New Year Festival at the Broadbeach Seniors Centre. This is their 5th year running the event, which is open to everyone, offering a fantastic opportunity to experience the vibrancy of Chinese culture through food, performances, and more.
A Packed Year of Activities
ANCWF have so much more planned for 2025. They’re offering a variety of classes and events designed to support both personal growth and community connection. Here are just a few highlights:
- Needlecraft and Sewing Classes at the Women’s Space at Labrador
- Classical Culture and Art Troupes at Broadwater Parklands
- Lion and Dragon Dancing Classes at Broadwater Parklands
- Social Badminton in Varsity Lakes
- Free English Classes in Carrara
- Computer Digital Literacy Classes in Carrara
- Dumpling Market Stall at the Emerald Lakes Markets
The Heart of ANCWF
What really stood out to me today was the warmth and dedication of everyone involved in the Federation.
I’m looking forward to attending their Lunar New Year events and seeing some of these activities in action throughout the year. If you’ve never experienced the their work, I highly recommend checking out one of their events or classes.
